1 Year Anniversary

As of July 2, 2012, it is exactly one year ago that we moved into our apartment.  Late on that day, almost the entire city of Copenhagen was under water.  We had a flood in our basement late that day.  It was on Saturday when we moved out of our house.  Luckily almost everything was moved out of the basement before the flood came very late Saturday afternoon.  After the rain subsided and the sewer began to finally carry the water away, we were able to push the all of the water out of the basement with a snow shovel.  We had to borrow towels from the neighbors (because our towels were packed in boxes and moved to the apartment) to dry up the last bit of water from the basement floor. Sunday - July 3, we continued with the last bit of moving and then it rained again and the basement got flooded again.  It was madness.

Right now we are having really lousy summer, like most of the world with either too much rain or heat.  Just 2 or 3 days before our 1 year anniversary, it was on the news that we should expect flood levels of rain again.  Everybody in Copenhagen was of course very nervous.  But luckily we saw only a medium amount of rain.
Unluckily for the neighboring island,  Fyn - the home of Hans Christian Anderson, just an hour west from here - it was where the sky decided to dump its load.

2 or 3 days after our 1st year anniversary, there came another down pour which flooded out Småland, Sweden, about an hour east of here.

I am so sorry for anyone who gets flooded out or dried out but it seems that this is the way the planet is moving.  On the news this week we saw Greenland being flooded with melting ice, due to very warm weather and lots of flooding in Japan as well, due to heavy rain.

Anyway.... enough weather reporting.  It's our first year in our apartment and we still love it here.  I've had a long break of not having to fix anything.  We've done nothing to the apartment but hang 2 flat screen tv's, a mirrow, and a lamp - that's it.  But soon I will have to get out the paint bucket and roller and give it a go to freshen up the walls.  Then we will have to get serious about decorating as it also has that "just moved in" look.  Months ago, one dinner guest asked, "Arn't you gonna hang that picture on the wall?  It was on the floor the last time we were here."   I responded, "Would you like a nail and hammer?"

12 - is the beautiful Danmarks Radio Concert Hall.  The music auditorium is a big concret ball lined with wood and split level plush chairs and all of it hanging in space on the inside of this big dark blue box. The light blue box next to that is Danmarks Radio televison/communications offices and studio.

The red link is where I walk our dog.  At a peppy pace but with time to allow for sniffing and pooping, it takes about an hour plus or minus, depending on how well the dog is behaving.





This is the last photo and just for fun.  Believe it or not, this is the Gemini building (the rounded double silo) and the New York apartment building (the box shaped in background).  Elevator and stairs were added to the inside of each of the silos (see bottom photo). A patch work of square holes were cut into the concrete walls to make doorways to the apartments that actually hang on the outside walls of the silos.  Likewise, a patchwork of square holes were cut into the concrete wall of the New York building to make windows for the apartments that are inside of the structure.  We sit on our balcony daily and enjoy the fascinating architecture of the Gemini building which is just across the street from us.
